Some things you just need to see (and hear)
The client helps people find accommodation near concert venues. Their mission and brand strapline is to help fans ‘get closer to the music’.
As such, we decided to create a range of insightful visualisations that really took people inside the music, to see and appreciate music in a way they never had before.
The origins of this idea were pretty straight-forward, but it took some interesting turns along the way.
We had previously created the Evolution of Dance music, so it made sense to make the rock version too.
But when we made the dance music graphic, the geographic origins of the different genres were a lot more distinct. For example, house music came from Chicago, techno from Detroit and hip hop from New Yorks. But with the different forms of rock, with the exception of some (like grunge from Seattle) the location was less clear.
And the number of different styles meant they weren’t all going to fit on one page.
So rather than a map, we decided to make the content scroll down a wall.

The design of ‘The Wall’ gave a subtle nod to one of the greatest rock albums ever. A little easter egg for fans who got the reference.
And there was another nice addition too. While it’s one thing to SEE the evolution of rock, we also wanted people to HEAR it. So we added audio samples of each genre – to further aid the viewer (and listener) in tracing the lines of musical influence.
