The client wanted content for ‘back to school’ season in America. But going back to school is really about the kids, and we needed to engage the parents.

So we wondered what it would mean for adults if they had to go back to school? The idea of exams came to mind, and from there we made a few short jumps – to Maths – to English – and on to spelling and grammar. Grammar!

Grammar’s a hot topic for a lot of people.

We emailed the office to ask our colleagues for their grammar pet peeves. It turned into the longest email thread in the company’s history.

We knew we were onto something.

But what could we do that was different?

Our developer, Rich had recently been playing with a JavaScript plugin that records people’s results (in a quiz or a game for example), and shows them how they compare with others. I wondered if we could apply this here.

Some people pride themselves on their grammatical ability. Let’s show them how good they really are. And if they’re as good as they think, they’ll probably tell their friends.

And thus, the grammar quiz was born.
